Live Action / Lila Rose Segment on CNN’s ‘Right on the Edge’ Documentary

What do you think? Fair? Informative?

  • Timmo

I thought it was quite good. You don't expect to get as fair a hearing on CNN as you would get on Fox News, but this wasn't too bad. They probably are trying to portray pro-lifers as radical and deceptive — and I guess the recent James O'Keefe episode won't help, but overall, yeah — I liked it.

  • http://generationsforlife.org/ John Jansen

I'm of the opinion that whenever the MSM deals with abortion, we have to set the bar *very* low.

That said, I was expecting a total hatchet job on CNN's part. After watching, I think it certainly could have been a lot more substantive — why not show more undercover footage from PP "counseling" sessions instead of spending so much time showing Lila getting into character and riding in a car? — but it could have been worse.

I agree with a previous poster that it was not close to being as substantive as it could've been, but I guess the expose was about Lila, not necessarily the message. The exposure is great and the truth will eventually win out in the end.

  • http://www.truthbomb.net Christin

I thought that was very good! It seemed like a very neutral piece, which is what the media should be doing. Praise God for this exposure!

  • Kevin

The good: they're are many who watch CNN thinking it is "just a news source" and are unaware of it's liberal tendencies – these ppl will be affected positively. CNN didn't do much talking, that's good too, haha.

The bad: there are many who watch CNN who, no matter how fair or balanced that report was, will just be angry at it. We pray those ppl are affected positively by it. Also, when CNN did talk, it definitely shed things in a negative light.

    Nonetheless, praise God….exposure!

  • Leslie

I agree with John Jansen's post–CNN could have featured much more undercover footage of Planned Parenthood, but the segment definitely could have been worse. I also agree that this will arouse some curiosity about Live Action raise awareness about the movement, what Planned Parenthood really is, and get others involved!

I couldn't be more thrilled-pleased-excited. Lila is a modern day martyr (martyr means "witness") for the Truth. The truth about the preciousness of life-whether unborn or walking on two feet.

  • carolyn silva

I couldn't be more pleased, thrilled, excited. Lila is a modern-day martyr (martyr means "witness". In this day and age the preciousness of life an never be exaggerated.

  • Life Lady

Well, it was lukewarm, meaning like warmed over pablum. The reporter did not give any comment, one way or the other, and chose footage that was also lukewarm. It would have fallen flat on someone on the edge, who has not made up their mind about where they stand, and left me, as an activist, wanting more substantial footage. Benign, would be a good word, but benign is not a positive expression, either. CNN did the barest minimum, and was not at all encouraging. She also looked like she was a bit of a oddity, dying her hair etc. and chewing gum. It is actually what I expected from CNN, a whole lot of air, and a definite lack of substantial positives. If that was all that they dared show of seven hours of open footage, Lila did her job, and CNN did theirs, which was to attempt to dim her light, but truly, she did shine, (she can't help it).

  • Sean

I heard a woman who was with 40 Days for Life at an abortion clinic the other day say, "I wish I didn't have to be here."

Lila, I am inspired by your actions for life, and how you have dedicated yourself to the cause of life – putting your own abitions aside in the fight to save other people.

God bless you, and give you the desires of your heart. You are inspirational.

  • http://trustinjesus.wordpress.com lozeerose

The piece is not bad at all. In my opinion the report was unbiased and did not seem to pass on "personal" partiality. Some may disagree but that is the nature of everything we read and watch. All of this must be internalized by the audience and that person will color the message as they see fit.

Also, those that think that more undercover footage should have been used or that the movement itself was not given enough air time are replacing their desires with that of CNN and the reporter, producer, etc. From the get go, the series that this is a part of seems to be aimed at profiling the drivers of the so-called "Right" agenda. Lila Rose and Live Action certainly fit that narrow definition.

That said, I do not place her or this excellent, inspiring organization on either side of the political spectrum. Ending abortion is not a political issue – it is a moral issue, a care human dignity issue.

I applaud you for your bravery and "creative extremism."

May the Lord bless you and keep you always.

  • Isabel

I live in Puerto Rico and CNN is our reference for international news coverage. I like that she got her chance showing the people the truth. Maybe someone’s heart is been touch with this report, and that is a great.

  • http://wisdomisvindicated.blogspot.com Ned

Frankly, the first thought that came to my mind was how much CNN would love to make Lila's face recognizable to every pro-abortion counselor in America . . . but keep up the good work LiveAction and Lila.

  • Holly

Hmm… Lila Rose is as candle standing on a hill that cannot be hid. Though she engages in undercover work, her "light so shines before men," when she speaks publicly, it is unmistakable! I thought the reporter liked Lila Rose as a person. At the same time, CNN in their showing the clip of James O'Keefe's ACORN sting outfit, along with James O'Keefe in recent date, demonstrates that the agenda of CNN, at least in part, was not benign. They may have sought incite 'the community organizers "activists' of the ACORN and Obama genre to organize against Lila Rose and her small group of pro-life youth activities. Though Lila Rose and her friends are sweet and wonderful, and their cause, just, there are some out there who, for what ever reason, despise anything to do with what they deem as "The Religious Right." Unfortunately there are those amonst ACORN who still harbor great hatred against James O'Kief (and Hannah Giles) and their friends for their expose. (It's very likely they have not forgiven or forgoten) This clip clearly demonstrated Lila Rose to be amongst those categorized as, 'The Religious Right." Of the Seven Hours of Video that Lila Rose provided to CNN, I wonder why CNN chose Lila Rose talking lightheartedly about being "Shot" and/or burned at the Stake. I realize she was most likely talking about Saint Joan of Arc and Martin Luther King, or John F. Kennedy, or Abraham Lincolin, or Mahatma Ghandi, those who were Martyred for their witness. At the same time, it concerns me that CNN chose to include those statement of Lila Rose. After Lila Rose spoke amongst her friends in the Hotel about those who gave their life for the cause of truth (?), she said, "OK, so, what are we going to do?" The next scene shows Lila Rose having her hair dyed bloned. (As if this was her Sacrifice?) Please be careful Lila Rose and all of the Life Action Team. Be wise. "Be Ye wise as serpants and harmless as doves." (Even as, I am sure, you are.) Please take up the Archangel Michael Rosary (Traditional Catholic/Christian) and/or daily devotion to Saint Michael the Archangel as He was also Saint Joan of Arc's Commander in Chief on the Battle Field, and Inspiration. And please travel in pairs! And, keep your eyes open. And, please know (even as I am sure you already know) that not everyone out there are "good guys." I am in admiration for your courage! But, I really and truly do not want to see you "Martyred" I want your witness to be a living witness for a long, long, long, long time! We need you Lila Rose! (And, company!) America needs you! God needs you here on Earth. The little children need you. I need you. My Daughter and her friends need you. (There are already enough Saints in Heaven!) Let God be your defender in Battle, but also consider having guards! In any event, thank you for your witness! And, thank you for your service! And most of all, thank you for Loving God, and demonstrating that love, by being a voice for the voiceless, the most vulnerable amongst us, the most defenseless, by being their Advocate.

And, may the will of God be done! And, thank you for asking God to use you, as a child, and, even now!

I really appreciate that you leave the source for the statement "abortion increases risk of miscarriages by 55% in subsequent pregnancies" in your most recent video.

Though, I find it kind of funny that when I looked up the article on google scholar:
    http://liveaction.org/blog/lila-rose-segment-on-c
    it instead says that:

"About 5.5% of pregnancies in the abortion cohort were miscarried and 4.0% in the reference cohort."

Do you know how to read scientific articles? Maybe your eye sight is bad and you missed the decimal and forgot that you would then need to average it between the 4.0% of miscarriages in the control group. You probably don't even know what a control group is.

I'm sure God really finds it inspiring how you're spreading lies to manipulate people into acting in accordance to your beliefs.

Plus, don't be such a dumb ass, if you're going to lie about stats at least don't leave me a direct path to your idiocy.

  • AD

Your organization is an answer to our prayers. I was impressed with your undercover activist approach, and just donated $50 to Liveaction.org. The public has a right to know of the evil and corruption that is rampant in the abortion industry. And they need to become aware that their tax dollars are funding and feeding this evil and corruption. If they only knew the truth, legalized abortion-on-demand would end once and for all.

Please keep doing God's work and give us more undercover and sting operations that shed the light of truth on the evil of the culture of abortion that has become a blight on America.

  • BrokenAngel66

I was also worried when I saw the CNN logo on there. I thought they would paint her too as a extremist as someone who is hurting this country. But its great to see them actually pretty unbiased which doesn't happen a lot with CNN since they are a liberal left wing "news" organization.

I just wanted to add, to that clip in the video of the women arguing with Lila Rose. That when Pro-Abortionist say "It's my body. You can't tell me what to do with my body." You know that whole not truly thought of excuse. Its not our bodies purely anymore. We share our bodies with another life. You can do whatever the f*&ck you want with your own body but when theres another life inside you. until that life is out of your body and can make there own choice weather to live or not what gives us the right to kill a life? Your all for "choice" So why are you so for taking away the choice of that LIFE? And weather a pro-abortionist will admit it or not, its a life. Science has even proven its a life. Not just cells. Thats a life. So stop taking away that PERSONS CHOICE.

I liked a number of things about this documentary:

    1. First appearance and comprehensive coverage on a major left-of-centre television network.

Lila Rose had previously appeared on various Fox News programs.  Although many people watch Fox, it is generally favoured by a conservative audience.  These viewers tend to be pro-life, so appearing solely on Fox could be considered a form of “preaching to the choir”.  CNN has a different viewership that includes people who dislike Fox News or (like me) lack access to the channel.  Expanding your audience is an essential, ongoing part of achieving your mission.  Appearing on this documentary allowed you to do that.

    2. Lila Rose did most of the talking.

The CNN journalist did not say much, allowing Lila’s personality to shine through.  In fact, a large portion of the footage was taken behind the scenes from the Mona Lisa Project.  It is clear from watching the documentary that Lila is compassionate, enthusiastic, optimistic, and overall very easy to like.  One of my favourite parts is the scene in which she is confronted by a pro-abortion apologist.  The contrast here is remarkable.  Lila states that “The country that I want to live in is the country that protects ALL PEOPLES’ rights” (emphasis added).  In response, the pro-abortionist states that “The country that I want to live in is not telling ME what to do with MY BODY” (again, emphasis added).  Lila is concerned with protecting all humans, whereas her opponent is only interested in her own body.  I’m glad that we could see this key difference between pro-life and pro-choice.

    3. Appearance of Planned Parenthood’s main PR executive.

He showed that he is more concerned with Live Action’s activities than the very real possibility that his clinics are covering up child abuse.  Enough said.

    4. Brief sampling of one of Live Action’s investigations.

This showed only one scene, but it is one of the most significant.  It should shock the viewers who are unfamiliar with the investigation.  A good case could be made that the documentary should have highlighted more of Live Action’s findings, but the documentary was supposed to be primarily about profiling the activists rather than showcasing the results of their work.

    5. Reference to Martin Luther King Jr.

Lila paraphrases a passage from the influential letter that Dr. King wrote while he was in a Birmingham jail, indicating that she was inspired by the civil rights leader’s call for “creative extremists”.  She later clarifies, noting that Martin Luther King was considered an extremist in his time just as pro-life advocates often are today.  Dr. King is one of the few people who all Americans respect (pro-life, pro-abortion, Republicans, and Democrats alike).  In a way, including this exchange in the documentary transcends any negative bias that CNN may have worked in (see below).  The next time CNN viewers see pro-lifers being described or portrayed as extremists, they will have to recall that MLK was also an extremist.

In spite of these positive features however, the documentary is undeniably biased against Lila Rose.  As with any good media bias, it is subtle but it is there.  It can be identified with a keen eye, and others who have posted here have already spotted most of the items that I’ll list.  Judging by the comments that I read on CNN’s page, many liberals, pro-abortionists, and other open-minded progressive people refused to watch the special.  However, those who actually did loved what they saw.  With such bias, it isn’t hard to see why:

      1. False premise.

The whole basis of the documentary is examining “conservative activists” who are armed with a “right-wing agenda”.  This doesn’t correctly describe Lila Rose or Live Action, neither of which have ever publicly identified themselves as conservative or advocated any type of right-wing agenda (as far as I can recall).  Lila Rose and the pro-life movement are indeed far more influential with American conservatives than they are with liberals.  However, this does not necessarily make them conservative.

The pro-life movement can and does include people of all political views.  Anyone (regardless of their positions on tax cuts, government spending, same sex marriage, gun control, or carbon emissions) who is “committed to the protection and respect of all human life” should be pro-life.  In America, there have been several excellent political leaders who were pro-life liberal Democrats.  Robert P. Casey (the dad, his son is a disappointment), the Democratic Governor of Pennsylvania, was the first person to challenge Roe. v. Wade before the Supreme Court.  In addition, he actually ran against pro-abortion Republicans.  Outside America, pro-life isn’t necessarily associated with conservatism at all.  All of the major political parties in Ireland (with the exception of Labour, as of late 2010) are completely pro-life, and they coexist quite comfortably.  It should also be noted that mainstream media will very often portray pro-life as the “conservative position”, but they do not generally describe pro-choice as the “liberal position”. See: http://newsbusters.org/blogs/tim-graham/2011/02/01/oops-npr-mangles-planned-parenthood-sting-story-forced-correct

The premise of this documentary is an example of the phenomenon.  Pro-life is the “conservative position”, while pro-choice is the default or mainstream position.  Such biased portrayal is an effective way of alienating liberals and moderates from a cause that they too should support.

The documentary also showed that Lila Rose and her allies are religiously motivated.  Normally, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing.  If anything, it provides a sense of purpose and humility.  You are servants of a loving God doing His work, rather than pompous self-righteous ideologues trying to impose some secular agenda on the world.  Unfortunately, the mainstream media has spent the last three decades convincing everyone that the so-called “Religious Right” (defined rather loosely) is a corrosive sector of American society.  It is theocratic, equivalent to the Taliban, and any people or ideas that can be linked to it are automatically irrational and bad for America.

Many viewers will let these prejudices kick in and will ignore whatever you have to say, regardless of the logic of your argument.  If they were told more about the kinds of people who championed the abolition of the slave trade in the British Empire, they might think twice before demonizing conservative Christians.  Knowing the mainstream media and the education system however, this isn’t likely to happen.  The CNN journalist didn’t directly identify Lila as part of the “Religious Right”.  She didn’t have to.  Labeling her a conservative activist and highlighting her religious convictions is enough for the audience to make the connection.

      2. Incredibly biased, misleading preview video.

The preview footage of the documentary showed Lila Rose and her team noting that all of the women in the abortion clinic were black.  See: http://www.cnn.com/2010/US/09/29/profiles.right.edge/index.html?hpt=C2

This comes across as racist to someone who is unfamiliar with your organization, as if she were complaining about black people.  Someone who knows what you’re about will easily see that she was doing the exact opposite.  She was actually lamenting abortion’s devastating effects on the black population and pointing out the racist motives of Planned Parenthood’s founder.  CNN had seven hours of footage provided by Live Action, along with six months of profiling, to choose from.  They selected the most controversial, context sensitive scene possible.  It is hard to get more biased than that.

      3. Use of the term “anti-abortion” instead of “pro-life”.

This was done several times by the journalist.  The term used to parallel “anti-abortion” is either “pro-choice” or “abortion rights” (standard across many mainstream media outlets).  This is a clever trick used to make the pro-life side more difficult to sympathize with.  Someone who knows little about the issue is naturally inclined to be “for” something rather than “against” something.  The labels given will automatically cause uninformed people to lean towards the pro-abortion side.

      • Mickey

        4. Footage selection.

In one scene taken from the Mona Lisa footage package, Lila has a rather serious discussion with David Schmidt about the hardships faced and sacrifices made by people who challenged past social injustices (imprisoned, ignored, burned at the stake, shot).  She then asks, “What are we going to do?”  Immediately following that line, the video abruptly cuts ahead to a scene where Lila dyes her hair (noting that she has never before done so).  This is clever editing, courtesy of the CNN team.  Cutting the film in such a way suggests that Lila’s big sacrifice is temporarily modifying her appearance, effectively portraying her as someone who is extremely vain and shallow.

        5. The last line.

To conclude the segment, the journalist states “Lila hopes one day to make movies, or better yet, become an actress.  But for now, she’s happy being an activist.”

Acting can be a noble profession, and there are many great people in the film industry.  However, placing the line at the very end and saying it in such a way creates the impression that Lila is really only doing this to land a career in Hollywood.  This is a recurring pattern – the journalist describes the other activists in a similar way (hungry for fame and fortune).  I’ve noticed that other media outlets and leftist commentators have since repeated this claim, using it to discredit or trivialize her work.

Personally, I take the line with a grain of salt.  Lila Rose has repeatedly made it clear that she has committed her life to ending abortion and building a culture of life.  I have not seen anything written or stated by Lila herself indicating that she is an aspiring actress.  It is unfathomable that she would first reveal this to a journalist that she (understandably) finds dubious.  The only thing that I’ve found that would suggest this conclusion notes that she performed in some school plays and enjoys acting (assets which helped her do undercover work).  The questionable statement was likely spun from these facts.

The other effect of this line is that the audience is never told how, when, or why Lila really became involved with pro-life work.  This is a much more compelling story, and excluding it does everyone a great disservice.  See http://www.firstthings.com/article/2010/09/fighting-for-life

Showing relevant images of unborn children and abortion victims would have also helped.  Unfortunately, CNN wanted to avoid inspiring pro-life sentiments in the audience.  This would probably be why they left all of these things out.

        6. Connection to James O’Keefe.

This last item is almost impossible to see if you only watch the Lila Rose segment.  The journalist correctly states that Lila worked with James O’Keefe in an earlier project.  She then quickly notes (correctly) that they haven’t worked together in years.  Nothing appears wrong with this description (though Lila has worked with far more interesting people who weren’t mentioned in the documentary).  However, watching the whole thing makes this bias easy to identify.

O’Keefe is referenced in several other segments, and he is portrayed as the patriarch and mastermind of these new media based movements.  He is clearly the star of the show.  The journalist goes into great detail about O’Keefe’s ACORN sting, which (as she notes) has been disproven.  She also describes his failed attempt to wiretap a senator, resulting in his arrest.  At the climax of the documentary, the journalist spends nearly eight minutes describing O’Keefe’s elaborate (and absurd) plan to seduce her and embarrass CNN.  This effectively makes O’Keefe look ridiculous.  He seems to be someone who will pull off anything to garner fame/notoriety (“comeback” music video), and is a rather pitiful figure that probably lacks mentors (parents, close friends, priests, etc).

O’Keefe’s segment, if nothing else, steals time from the legitimate activists (including Lila).  Furthermore, his appearance automatically creates negative impressions about everyone in the documentary.  Pro-abortion sympathizers never fail to invoke guilt by association by clinging on to the fact that Lila once worked with James O’Keefe (they seem to forget about the people Obama used to hang out with).  Some mainstream sources have even incorrectly identified Lila as an associate of James O’Keefe’s.  The CBS evening news segment linked on this site has done just that:
        http://liveaction.org/blog/planned-parenthood-video-investigation-featured-on-cbs-evening-news/

Despite its many flaws, I am glad that CNN decided to make this documentary and that Lila agreed to do it (albeit reluctantly, and understandably so).  This special is arguably better than most mainstream coverage allocated to pro-life activists and events.  It is proof that your organization is in fact making an impact on the abortion debate and the mass media.  Although the Right on the Edge documentary won’t make pro-abortionists hate you any less, it may compel curious undecided people to learn more about your work (along with previously uninformed pro-lifers).  Some of these people could very well become supporters if they are open to the truth about abortion and the abortion industry.

I’m glad that you didn’t give us your opinion about the coverage.  What do I think?  Fair?  More so than most media reports, though still biased.  Informative?  For the most part, but it certainly doesn’t give us a three-dimensional view.  We do see a leader with charm and charisma.  We don’t see a tireless advocate who has devoted her life to an uphill battle for the basic rights of the most vulnerable humans.  Where’s the rest of her?

  • Texas Patriot

Very impressive! This young lady is a courageous woman and should be commended for her actions. I wish the absolute best for her and this organization. Godspeed.

We will be supporting your PRO-life movement….The christian mother would support this…we will expose it to other prolife-movement!!! Thanks for spreading God’s mission…I’m sure you’ll be bless!!

  • Grateful

I am a proud conservative to see such a creative, energetic group of young people stand for what is right.  Shame on me and my generation for keeping quiet so long.  There are things we can do to bring the truth out into the open, and then let people decide when they have all the facts- not just the ones the liberal left wants them to hear.  You have my prayers and my support.

Go Lila!    Just a little story for everyone. After my mother had passed away, my dad finally told me of her inner torture, that haunted her most of her adult life. When she was a young girl and had gotten married to her first husband, she had become pregnant at least twice. Her then husband insisted she have the babies aborted. She was young and easily influenced and had the abortions.  Finally when she became pregnant with “my older half brother” she finally left her husband so she could have the new baby. That baby was my wonderful brother! My father told me that all her life she lived with the guilt of what she done and was worried whether God would forgive her. My brother grew up and got married and had two children who have raised two beautiful families and I am now a great great uncle! Just a little story from me to you.

  • mooky

    God bless you all.

As a man  I believe you are doing a great thing. Only God gives life and He has the right to take it. Man does not.

  • Matteasmom107

I am just curious why there is so much animosity towards the “left” in these comments? I am very liberal, and I’m pro-life. The two are not mutually exclusive. In fact many liberals are actually pro-life on the grounds of human rights.

I wish people would stop making this a political issue. There are many people on the left who would probobly “convert” to being pro-life if people took the time to explain why they feel so passionately, without resorting to attacks or using religious arguments. It is nothing but divisive and I can’t tell you how many people are ONLY pro-choice because of their politics, because this has become such a politicized issue. If you truly care about life you should take the time to win hearts and minds instead of being so judgemental.

    • Cqtolbert

As much as i would also love for this to not be a political issue, unfortunatly there is a large majority of people on the left that think abortion is a womens right. I agree that we should win pro-choice people over though, i have many liberal friends, some are pro-life some arent, but ive tryed many times to get through to the pro-choice ones, and i get no results but them dis-liking me a little more. It’s sad that it is a political issue but theres too much of a difference among those on the right compares to those on the left as far as those who support abortion or don’t.

I think the video was fair and informative.  Lila Rose is doing a good thing exposing the truth about abortion and I am glad that she is doing so.  However, CNN is moderate, not liberal, regardless if it had documentaries about the radical right.  If it had done a negative portrayal of the radical left, nobody would complain, not even most liberals would.  I also agree with Matteasmom107 that people have a very narrow view of liberals.  I am Catholic and liberal and am for the pro-life movement, in all aspects of life.  If we are going to call ourselves prolife, we need to be against not only abortion, but also the death penalty, genocide, war, embryonic stem cell research, euthanasia, guns, violence, economic injustice, and hatred.  We are called by God to spread the Gospel of Life in all aspects of life, not just in one aspect of it.
